Psychology Tutoring & Academic Mentoring
Expert one-to-one psychology tutoring for undergraduate and postgraduate students
I’m Dr Alex Law and I offer specialist online psychology tutoring and academic mentoring for undergraduate and Masters students who want to deepen their understanding, strengthen their academic work and become more confident, independent learners.
As an HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologist with a BSc in Psychology, an MSc in Health Psychology from King’s College London and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, I bring both academic and applied experience to my teaching, alongside over 13 years of experience tutoring psychology students and time working within the NHS and private practice.
Whether you are aiming for a first or distinction, tackling your first postgraduate assignment, getting to grips with statistics or feeling stuck with a dissertation, our sessions are shaped around what you need to move forward.
Clinical psychology training requires you to move constantly between psychological theory, research, statistics, academic writing, critical appraisal and the practical application of evidence. I bring that perspective to my tutoring while adapting sessions to the individual student, their course and their stage of study.
What I particularly enjoy about tutoring is helping students reach the point where something clicks: when a difficult concept makes sense, an argument comes together, or a student begins to trust their own academic judgement.
What students say
How I can help
Every student is different, so sessions are tailored to your course, your goals and the areas where you would most value support. I can help with:
Dissertations and research projects
Developing research questions, planning projects, understanding methodology, working through challenges and making sense of supervisor feedback.
Academic writing
Developing clear, well-supported arguments, improving structure and learning to write critically rather than descriptively.
Research methods and statistics
Building genuine understanding and confidence in research design, methodology and statistics rather than simply learning which test to use.
Critical thinking
Learning to evaluate research and evidence, develop and defend your own position, and move beyond description towards sophisticated critical analysis.
APA 7th edition
Understanding and accurately applying APA 7th edition referencing, citation, formatting and presentation conventions.
Undergraduate and Masters psychology
Working through difficult concepts, strengthening subject knowledge and understanding what is expected at university and postgraduate level.
Study confidence and complex academic tasks
Creating structure when assignments or dissertations feel overwhelming, breaking complex work into manageable steps and developing greater confidence in your own academic decision-making.
Exam preparation
Helping you to structure and plan your revision for exams, practicing writing under pressure and revision strategies for closed book exams.
How I work
My aim is not simply to help you improve one piece of coursework. I want you to develop the skills of a confident, critical and independent academic.
That means learning to engage critically with research, evaluate the strength of evidence, develop and defend your own position, construct convincing arguments, and understand the reasoning behind methodological and statistical decisions.
My sessions are warm, collaborative and intellectually rigorous. I use a Socratic approach, often asking questions rather than simply giving you the answer. We work through your thinking together so that you understand not only what to do, but why.
This can be particularly helpful if you know you are capable but find yourself second-guessing your work, struggling to translate your ideas onto the page, procrastinating, or getting stuck or overwhelmed by a large academic task. I can help you create structure, identify a manageable way forward and build confidence in your own academic judgement.
Everything we do is grounded in academic integrity. I can teach, challenge your thinking, discuss ideas, help you interpret feedback and provide appropriate feedback on your work. I can also help you understand research methods and statistical concepts, but I won’t write assessed work or complete assessed analyses on your behalf.
The work remains yours. My role is to help you develop the knowledge, judgement and confidence to produce work you can genuinely be proud of.
Tutoring is an educational service. Although my experience as a Clinical Psychologist informs the warmth and understanding I bring to my teaching, tutoring is separate from psychological therapy and clinical supervision.
Support for international students studying in the UK
I work with international students studying psychology at UK universities who would like additional support adapting to the expectations of the UK academic system.
Moving between academic systems can involve much more than studying in a different language. Expectations around critical analysis, argument, independent learning, academic writing and the use of evidence may be quite different from those you have encountered previously.
I can help you understand what UK universities are looking for and develop the skills to meet those expectations confidently and independently.
Support can include:
- Understanding UK academic conventions and assessment expectations
- Developing critical rather than descriptive academic writing
- Structuring arguments clearly and using evidence effectively
- APA 7th edition referencing, citation and formatting
- Understanding and responding to feedback from university tutors
- Research methods, statistics and dissertation work
- Developing confidence in your academic writing and decision-making
I have particular expertise in APA 7th edition referencing and formatting and can help you understand and apply these conventions accurately, rather than simply correcting references for you.
All tutoring is available online, allowing me to work with students across the UK and internationally.
